A years-long process to bring a new cruise ship pier to an in-demand summer cruise destination is finally on its way to the construction phase. City officials recently approved a lease for city-owned submerged tidelands required to build the new downtown cruise ship dock.
The city already has multiple cruise ship docks, but a cruise tourism boom in recent years has increased the need for an additional port facility, which is expected to ease downtown congestion. Overtourism concerns led the city to limit cruise ship arrivals and negotiate passenger caps, with a new dock in the works to manage cruise tourism impacts effectively.
The Juneau Assembly approved the tidelands lease for the construction of Juneau's fifth cruise ship dock, which will include a waterfront development called Àak'w Landing. This project, led by native-owned Huna Totem Corporation, aims to enhance the cruise tourism experience while preserving the local environment and culture.
Under the project's conditions, the new dock will prioritize sustainability by allowing only one large cruise ship per day and requiring shore power usage to reduce emissions. The project aligns with efforts to address environmental concerns and improve the overall visitor and resident experience in Juneau.
Another proposed cruise port project by Goldbelt Incorporated and Royal Caribbean Group aims to further alleviate congestion in Juneau by offering passengers direct access to tours and cultural experiences. These developments signify a strategic approach to managing cruise tourism impacts and enhancing the destination's appeal.
