The word marriage translates into Arabic as nikah, which literally means 'union of the sexes.' In simple terms, marriage in Islam is a contract that takes place after a valid offer and acceptance.
The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said: 'Marriage is part of my Sunnah, and whoever does not follow my Sunnah has nothing to do with me. Get married, for I will boast of your great numbers before the nations. Marriages are more blessed when they follow the Sunnah because they embody simplicity and sincerity.
As Kashmiri Muslims, we must ask ourselves -- are we truly following the Sunnah, the simplicity, and the words of our Prophet (SAW)? Our marriages should be simple and based on Islamic ethics and values. This is the story of everyone -- rich or poor. Why have we become slaves to fashion and westernization? Why do we not consult our elders about how they performed their marriages?
Nowadays, people spend a huge portion of their wealth, savings, and other resources on lavish marriages. Unfortunately, we have fallen into this unhealthy social trap. What is this madness? Why have we lost our senses and remain silent spectators? The problem with modern weddings lies in their extravagance and departure from simplicity and modesty.
Marriages should be simple and modest. Our society should focus on the education, growth, and future of children rather than wasting resources on lavish ceremonies. Simplifying our traditions will help families live happier and more meaningful lives.
