After multiple attempts in recent weeks, a senior Department of Homeland Security official has responded to KEYC News Now's request for comment following the deletion of five Minnesota State University Mankato students' records from the student exchange visitor information system.

In a statement, DHS says Homeland Security conducts regular reviews of student visa holders' records to ensure they remain in compliance with the program requirements.

There are a variety of reasons a student's record may be deleted, including not being registered for enough classes, withdrawing from classes, the student is employed, or not meeting other program requirements.

The statement goes on to say this process is nothing new and is part of its program and long-standing protocol.

Students who have their record terminated or visa revoked are typically given 10 days to depart the country.
