CARICOM Leaders Discuss Geopolitical Issues and Regional Integration at Summit

CARICOM leaders recently wrapped up a productive summit focusing on geopolitical issues and regional integration. Prime Minister Mia Motley highlighted the importance of unity in facing global challenges, from changing geopolitics to climate crises.

The summit acknowledged the need for Caribbean countries to expand, with France and Martinique potentially joining CARICOM as an associate member. Discussions also centered on freedom of movement, with plans to facilitate easier movement for CARICOM nationals.

Leaders emphasized the urgency of enhancing maritime and air transport, particularly through ferry services and private sector collaboration. An inter-governmental working group will work on mutual recognition of licenses and dismantling trade barriers.

The summit also engaged with the Sandals tourism group to enhance regional tourism competitiveness. Efforts will focus on aligning hospitality training, digitizing systems, and promoting sustainable practices.

Additionally, leaders addressed concerns about the Caribbean Examinations Council and proposed the establishment of a CARICOM educational transformation commission to modernize educational systems.
